A cv, which stands for curriculum vitae, is generally used in the academic (teaching) profession and is an expanded resume. It basically lists everything that's important for the prospective employer to know, and isn't limited to a page or page and a half. In fact, I've seen some that are 20 pages in length!

By contrast a resume is your traditional 1 to 1 1/2 page summary of your background.

However, both are used for the exact same purpose which is to provide some details about your qualifications for the job.

CV refers to curriculum vitae and is usually used by professionals such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. that are just starting out in the profession. Includes all credentials, publications, etc. and is more detailed than a regular resume.
