Some programs on your computer want automatic Internet connections. IE programs seeking to get the latest automatic updates Anti-Virus programs, Real Player, even Windows and a whole lot more

If on Broadband you are automatically connected to the Internet when you start your computer and various programs will access the Internet without you doing anything.

If you are using dial-in and you have auto dial enabled (not recommended) programs on your computer can dial automatically to your ISP that you have specified in the dial-in settings. To disable auto dialing go to Internet Options in the control panel and click on the connections tab and choose never dial a connection. Then go into network connections in the control panel and click on the Advanced tab near the top and choose dial-up preferences, Unchecked everything listed under the auto dial tab. This will prevent any programs dialing up themselves, but you can still use dial-up when you want to.

If you have a broadband connection, such as dsl or cable, or a LAN, then the connection will automatically be made on system startup. You can right click on the connection icon and choose disable. This will disable the card, and keep the connection off until you enable it again yourself.

should be immediately on once you turn the device on, only set your community connection to point for your router (assuming you've a router, once you've a crappy USB broadband modem then you're out of luck - get a router!)
