I'd say for 1. Marketing ploy. and 2. Shipping delay. Marketing nowdays isdown to a fine art. If you make people believe it's sooo in demand, and that you "everybody" will be scrambling to get "so few" then you can make $650 a pop, instead of $250-$300 they will prob go for in a year, if that long. Just an opinion. Notice all the free press they got out of all the news outlets? About the panics and riots, ect... People at times tend to follow the herd like cattle. It's perception.

Marketing hype. Sony are very adept at getting grown men practically salivating over something as trivial as a video game.

Just wait for the news stories of the lengths gone to to import them, the people camping outside shops on the day of release, pre-release machines going for thousands on eBay...

They are good at this.

Originally it had issues with overheating. I think the latest delay is due to a problem with getting enough stock made to make a sucessful market launch.

Sony will give excuses but this happens every new launch of a product. It is to rack up anticipation and pre-ordering to guage the publics needs.
This in its turn creates the demand so that stores order in more quantities than they would normally.

-Had Blu-Ray problems (what else is new :P)
