...I need to get regular sewing thread to be stiff enough to hold the shape I give it and support just a little weight (no more than a couple needle's worth of weight, at most). However, I need the thread to look as if nothing is on it or supporting it. What substance would be best to accomplish this?

...are there any kinds of glues that may work if I were careful to remove the excess? The thread will need to be pretty hard.

When I want to invisibly stiffen an item that I crochet, permanently, I go to the local craft and hobby store and buy a bottle that hardens fabric into a material similar to porcelain, only less breakable. I've forgotten the name and didn't find the bottle I last used, so ask the helpful clerks, they'll know what it is since it's used on ribbons year-round. If you do not want it to be permanent, use starch straight from the bottle without diluting, let dry in the shape you want and use. Humidity will take away the stiffness and of course, washing it will remove the starch. The product I use on crocheted items is permanent, can be dipped to wash and even spray painted, (something I did for the clock faces). Good luck.

There are a few things to try...one way to stiffen could be bees wax, it doesn't show, stiffens and smells nice. Just pull the thread and neede through a small candle would work too, doesn't have to be bees wax. Another thing you could try would be the gel matte thickener or an acrylic thickener. This will dry clear, be matte finish and stiffen your thread thereby adding strength. Good luck. I sew alot so I have tried each that I have said here, I like Bees wax best though.

There is several ways to do it. Beeswax, and nail polish are the regular suggestions. But have you ever thought of Hair spray?

wax, glue, lacquer, perhaps clear nail polish, starch.... a whole bunch of things I guess.
