Even the 'nice' ones I've met genuinely believe their country is better than everyone elses. And they have no respect for the environment. Or am I talking pants?

You're right. Some of us are very arrogant.
I'm sorry if you think we're all arrogant.
I'm not.
I'm not even patriotic. No flag waving, no 4th of July BBQ, no nothing.

USA arrogance caused all the suffering in the world, a Vietnam war, Iraqi genocide, South American hell by sending economic hitmen to SA, etc. etc. While some Americans are nice, but in general, a hole without soul.

America is the third largest country in the world after India and China with over 300 million people. It also has the largest navy in the world, and one of the largest standing armies. The United States is also the place where many innovations have come about such as cars, skyscrapers, air craft etc.. Many people come to the US for freedoms not given in their homeland.
If Americans are considered arrogant it is because they have been given good reason. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country's achievements. In fact this is normal behavior. If you have noticed In Britain (and perhaps every other country on Earth) they think they are better than the rest.
One thing I absolutely hate is people coming to America and hating america. My mother had this boss from Africa who clapped when the Columbia shuttle exploded and he said 'they got what they deserve'. My mom was like "why are you even here?". This country that got what it deserved allowed you to enter it's territory and experience the freedoms given by the constitution. Same goes for American hating Americans; if you don't like it here with all these arrogant people just leave. No one is keeping you here. In fact there are millions of Immigrants who would happily switch places with you.

The biggest load of bull I've read in ages.

So just because you just happen to have been born in America, that gives you the right to be feel proud of its achievements???

I'm sure America's a great country but that doesn't mean I should have an inferiority complex to someone just because they happen to have been born there.

It's ridiculous for anyone to be proud just because they were born somewhere.

Because most if not all Americans have little culture, and the vast majority next to zero. They are kept in this condition by the upper classes and by the establishment who wants them to think little, and at the same time to think so highly of themselves.
They are also very conceited, and they believe to be the undisputed leaders of the world. The point is that they are unaware that this is not true, the large majority of Americans are "Happy Jacks" with little knowledge besides their work. Around the world there are millions actually billions of people with a strong economy, who achieve excellent results. America is being surpassed every day by millions of other professionals in the world, still Americans continue to claim that they will be "leaders" of the world. I wonder how they will feel the day they will realize it.

Occams Razor can best answer this question.

To generalise, my experience with Americans has been that on a whole their public education system is quite poor. Combine that with a deplorable lack of understanding and/or knowledge of cultures outside of "Yankieland" and you have your (generalised) standard yank - an ignorant, uneducated and uncultured hick. :)

To sum up in the spirit of Mr Ockham - Big mouth and small brain = arrogant yank. :)

Umm maybe because we have the best all around military, most powerful economy, and a very wealthy population. Also, why do u think the world decided to put the U.N here if we aren't the center of the world. Not to mention we have won basically ever war since our existence.

I am American and I don't believe my country is better. I believe we are all equal and I think that it is sickening to think that Americans can be so arrogant. Many think that because for nearly two centuries we had "America is the best" pounded in our heads. I used to be the same way but then I got less narrow minded.
