It sucks, but in the back of general managers' minds is how they'll more than recoup the money they're paying for Borowski, Speier, et. al. by increased attendance at the baseball games they play. Nobody comes to see the managers, they come to see the "talent" such managers can attract.

The market is inflating these day and you can thank Scott Boras for this trend (although you should have see this coming already). Speier was consider to be a closer in waiting after putting up good relief numbers in Toronto and the Angels bite on that potential; sign him to a 4-year deal to become the primary set-up man for K-Rod, making Scot Shields tradable due to their resources on the bullpen (one of the best in baseball). Borowski had come out of his best season in Florida and with Cleveland having no closer to close out within their farm system, their desperate to replace Bob Wickman in anyway. Just look at some deals that already happen, even before Winter Meetings started and you will find out that this market is not going to stop inflating anytime soon, thanks to guys like Steinbrenner and Boras, although their is a light in form of cheap prospects (both MVP's, Ryan Howard and Justin Morneau, are earning less than $400,000).

It's because teams need better pitching but a lot of good pitchers have already signed deals or deal isn't done so now GMs pay good money for those pitchers.

Pitching is a commodity, spending is going up again, free agency is a little lean this year.
