homosexuality is a polygenic trait. Meaning that many genes are involved (we don't know how many and we don't know where they are all). We also don't know which environmental factors influence brain development and gender development in any one individual. So what was I trying to say about nature and nurture? Most scientific studies thus far suggest that it is a combination of both NATURE AND NURTURE. Biologically I would argue that evidence suggests that many genes plus unknown environmental factors working mainly during prenatal development cause same sex attraction. Born gay - yes. Choice - not in most cases. Like we said in class that makes this characteristic difficult to understand and about as complex as they come...just like alcoholism, mental illness.

So we won't be able to simply choose not to have a homosexual child by a DNA test. Despite what you read in the papers this genome stuff is never that simple. I do try to simplify it a bit when I talk to the general public and the presentation that I shared in class was first developed for PFLAG (parents and friends of gays and lesbians). Since parents can't chose not to have homosexual children the more important question becomes...what should parents if a child says they are gay??? O.K. all you parents out there what would you do??

What would any parent do? You're still a parent of a child, why should their sexual preference affect your love for them.

Firstly if they told you then they've likely gone through a lot of stress and heartache before letting it get that far and you've got to respect that and let them know you're there for them.

Apart from that, just be a parent, they're still your child.

It sounds very good to me. You stay impartial while still being able to present your point of view, and I don't think you're proposing anything that hasn't been discussed (for example, you don't say that it's one gene responsible for homosexuality, but possibly a mixture we still don't really know yet). id give my daughter a big hug. Id tell her congratulations on her discovery. Id tell her if she ever need help or was having trouble with other people{school mates} we'd just call uncle bear and the Big guy take care of it.

Well, when my daughter came out to me as a lesbian, I said that I was ok with it and would be more than happy to meet any girlfriend she wanted to bring home for us to meet. It is much more important to me that she be who she is than trying to fit into a mold placed on her by society.

After I finally got the nerve to tell them, they said they loved me and that it would be a hard tough life for me if I "went" that way but they would always love me and support my "decision". They have always supported me and loved me un-conditionally..I am lucky to have such great loving parents....

tough question . i still look at it as a mental disorder I'm sure there will be another nonscientific report and another after that one before we really know what drive some peoples to be homosexual . but thank and happy holliday
