Its so sad to hear this. But unfortunately, these things do happen, and are part of life. Its not easy to watch the news somedays. but keep in mind, alot of these things, and worse, were happening years and years ago- we just didn't have the means to spread the stories and information so quickly and easily. There are things we would have never heard of 50-100 years ago- but with the technologies of today, you can get video of anything, pictures, in real time. And like another poster said- sad stories, tragedies, they sell. People for some reason gravitate to drama- like the people that slow down to view a traffic accident scene. Until more people ask/demand for some balance in the news, it will continue to be reported that way. There are many wonderful people in the world, ,many beautiful things that do happen everyday. Try not to let the story bring you down. While it is tragic that the man died trying to save his family, its wonderful his wife and children did live. He did not die in vain, and he will live on in their survival. He will be remembered for his bravery for his family.

I don't believe that human loss and suffering will ever truly come to an end. If it concerns you a lot, then don't watch the news and stay oblivious to the harder side of life. Things like these have been happening for ages, just in today's society, the networks and the press find that they can gain viewers/readers by talking about other people's tragedies.

It won't. the media doesn't spend a lot of time talking about good news. Remember "if it bleeds it leads" so the news thinks we always want to hear about the most shocking and disturbing news.If theres video to go with it all the better.More shock value.
Its sad because it lends people to believe that because some nut job that poisoned Halloween candy once years ago that we ALL need to be fearful which is nonsense. The worst is that it heightens every ones fear factor based on exposure to "news" that usually has no bearing on our personal lives.
Learn to separate bad news from your reality. ask 'Does it have any effect on my life or even those around me?-Usually not. As SRV said- "You can't change it-you can't rearrange it -time is all that we got- so baby let's take it"

Watching the news is very painful. We must Love and take care of our families and the people we care about, and give to others as we can, whether we give time or money. I don't know what else we can do, besides pray for God to watch over the family you mentioned.

Life is a wonderful thing, but there will always be bad things that happen. Truly, pain and suffering are inevitable, but we can work past these things if we focus on the good and make the best of our own situations.

Never. Stories of hapiness dont sell newspapers. People could care less about feel good news reports. They want death and destruction. Why? "Schaudenfreud" - getting satisfaction from others misery..... It makes them feel better about their own pathetic situation..."Man, my life sucks, but at least Im not stuck out in the wilderness or my kids arent being kidnapped..."
They found him dead? I live in SF and havent even heard this yet....bummer....

It touched me too.
All YOU can do is love your family. Their family has been broken and prayers are out to them, but in the end you can only control how often you tell your family that you love them.
It did break my heart to know that he didn't survive.

I know I am weeping as we speak. We do not think of tragedies such as this happening in the modern world.
Reminds me of the book Giants in the Earth by Ole Rolvaag but that was published in 1927

28 days old baby in the microwave till death?
