The answer above me is the most cliche answer ever. "A HOPE for mankind!" Wow. Here's some gains:
Blood Pressure Recorders
Scratch-resistant lenses for glasses
Nitinol (Alloy used for maleability in braces)
Pacemakers
Implantable insulin pumps
Changes our understanding of the universe/ Historically significant
Generate goodwill and raise international harmony
And Most importantly: TANG!
On a serious note: While money SHOULD be spent on health care and social programs, advances can only be attained if we also look OUTWARD and take on prospects that challenge our intellect.

The subcategories of countries gained bragging writes of who touched the moon first or got to space first. (Cold War Russia and US). Exploring space is the only frontier left for mankind. Traveling there though has lead to a better understanding of how Earth and our Solar System formed (theory Big Bang). Also the question - Is there life out there? (discovering frozen water on mars) - has effected culture by the creation of videos. The human race gained knowledge, which we always will strive for (hopefully), some crappy sci-fi movies, and a better understanding of why we are here.

Wider understanding of the Universe, and because We are part of it, better understanding of ourselves. Also, We have gained a lot of data about, for example, star birth, death; how do they work and so on. Other thing - we have better means of discovering dangers, like comets or meteors (and many others, that We wouldn't have had idea about, if We hadn't collected data from space).
The landing on the moon wasn't really profitable, but as We probably all know, it was political, not scientific thing.
On the other hand, exploration of Mars can give us quite a lot of new space to live. After finding ways to colonize the Red Planet, We can gain means to resolve overcrowding problem, that has already began to spread.
PS And yes. Hope. Thanks for mentioning that; really.

The biggest thing would be the massive debt. I think the Hubble space telescope has provided more thought for scientists on how big the universe really is.
The voyager probe has outlasted its use by date 3 times over and till sending back data unbelievable!
As far as benefits go, we have new materials that are used in everyday life and the fear of cancer from some, on a cost basis very very little benefit, except scientific.

Just off the top of my head, I can say that we gained the following: remote medical monitoring, telemetry, the entire semiconductor industry, kevlar, kidney dialysis, finite element analysis, improved weather forecasting, an understanding of how unique our little planet is, and the list goes on and on. You could fill up Y!A's database with stuff.
If Americans really understood that the money we spend on NASA is returned to us over and over again, they'd demand more funding for NASA.

Moon rocks. Isn't that worth the billions of dollars we spent? Moon rocks are much more important to the human race than say the cure for cancer.

That looks like the "super no longer something" threat in the action picture "the in no way ending tale". It replaced into pronounced that once human beings stopped believing of their imaginations or books, legends could be forgotten or disappear as a results of fact the action picture, no longer in existence. i do no longer think of issues end or disappear basically as a results of fact somebody dies or forgot. however know-how of the universe could be defined scientifically by genious varieties of professors, yet what human beings understand approximately from drowsing and visions of the destiny, or previous-existence is in no way ending. it quite is why data purely remember slightly to me, as a results of fact the earth could have the data of many galaxies by starlight yet maybe no longer existence on each megastar. technological understanding-fiction can attain some surfaces, yet it quite is basically my opinion.
