Because for the many years that the Nation has had millions upon millions in taxes paid- there is little evidence that the monies have been applied to the mutual benefit but rather it has been systematically siphoned into private holdings using creative (corporate) accounting - it is now probably the largest corporate republic on the planet and its influence is felt across the planet- it has the largest debt with the world bank? - and the biggest armies and most efficient methods of killing on a large scale- more people have firearms per capita and consequently more deaths resultant from domestic firearms than any other presumed to be civilized peaceful country in the world- a leading democracy controlled by the influence of money rather than commonsense....
It is not necessary to be proud to be an American- just be glad that you are one of us humans that still question- with "Cheers"

Two main reasons: One, we have the ability to practice freedom of religion which is much more important than people realize. In other countries if you do not adhere to the practices of those in power you could be incarcerated or even put to death. Second, our process of law....We go to great lengths here in america to extend to it's people the ability to have a fair trial. I know the judicial system seems like a joke in many cases and has gotten out of control in many instances, but it is still much better and much more rewarding than a majority of courts around the world. Most countries the people have no rights, end of story. So, freedom of religion & process of law I'd have to say is why I love this country. I'm an atheist that isn't very happy with America right now, and I still love my country.... how ironica is that? be well, Jack

because I am able to share my opinions freely without having to worry that those who may disagree can not persecute me for those beliefs.
I am free to travel, unmolested from state to state without having to show papers.
I am able to do as little or as much as it requires to succeed. I have the freedom to prosper if I make wise choices and act as a productive citizen.
I am free to worship, or not, at any religion of my choice and not be required to follow a government sponsored religion.
I have freedom to communicate globally with friends and make new friends using the same methods of communication.
I am free to say I don't agree with my leaders and even be rude in disrespectful if I choose without fear of reprisal. (although I don't)
I am free to start my own business and other than taxes, I have so many choices open to me in the running of my business.
I'm sure I could come up with several hundred more but I'm out of coffee so I have to jump in my Jeep and go to the store without showing papers and probably won't have to wait on line to buy coffee due to shortages. (who recalls the toilet paper lines in Moscow in the 80s?)
