An ornithologist studies all aspects of birds lives. But there are degrees of the study.
Ornithologist- studies birds and their environment. Evolution, history, migration routes, physiology, the whole lot.
Bird watcher- is an Ornithologist that studies much the same when they can, and reports findings to a Group that passes on the findings to Ornithologists.
Twithcher- is an Ornithologist that goes Hell Bent on travelling thousands of miles to find as many species of birds in a set period of time. Then hands the list to the Bird Watchers who scoff and laugh at Twitchers list saying that bird could never be there. The Bird Watchers then pass the list to the Ornithologists, who say, "That bird should not be there."
The Ornithologists then get a Government grant to check the area out and stop a Nuclear Power Plant from being built because of an endangered bird.
Sorry for being sarcastic, but Ornithology can be as wide spread as I have described. People have been paid to wipe out the European Starling in Australia, they are called Ornithologists. I agree, the bird is a pest. So I suggest if want a profession as a bird watcher, go for it. 20 years ago I would have, now I am a twitcher and still love watching them.

Ornithology (from the Greek ornis = bird and logos = word/science) is the branch of zoology concerned with the scientific study of birds. Several aspects of the study of ornithology differ from closely related disciplines, perhaps because of the high visibility and the aesthetic appeal of birds. Most marked among these is the extent of field studies undertaken by amateur volunteers working within the parameters of strict scientific methodology.
