My friend went downstairs and found that the kettle was on when she was all alone in the house. This happened twice just like that. Could this be somesort of poltergiest activity?

That does sound like it. Try removing the kettle into another room and see what happensl. If that kettle winds back on the stove then you will be in need of serious help. I also recomend that you do some real research on poltergiest and the ways of stoping them...............................

May be she just forgot the stove was on, not sure if a ghost can operate a stove. If it keeps happening, set up a camcorder, also have stove checked to see if it's shorting out, which could cause it to turn on.

LOL trust me, a lot of "creepy" things have happened to me, but there's causes to them, and in all the cases, the cause isn't "ghosts"
