Try explaining in ways your 5 year old will understand that Santa Claus the person is not real, but Santa Claus the idea is. Tell him/her the story of the real St. Nicholas and how the tradition in giving gifts at christmas got started mostly because of him. It is a great story and one worth sharing. Explain the the idea of Santa Claus is so good and powerful because giving to one another from the heart is always good. My 18 year old still believes in "Santa Claus" even though, of course, she knows that he doesn't bring presents...but he is still real, and will always be real as long as there are people who keep the tradition of generousity to the less fortunate and graditude to our friends and family alive.

If your 5 year old is bright and inquisitive enough to ask the hard questions, I guess it is time to slowly let him/her in on the truth.

With my nephews we stopped pretending that Santa was anything more than myth and symbol when the kids started understanding that something was up with this mysterious guy. Santa still comes around once in a while, though, but it is obvious that it is Uncle X or even Aunty Y that's wearing a fake beard. And a lousy one too!

I can't think of any Santa lies, because my mother never told me their was anything like Santa or the Easter bunny. She thought making up pretend creatures would make her children disbelief her in other areas, later in life. I followed this philosophy with my children, after all we tell them not to open the door to strangers, why would we tell them a man comes into our house, while everyone is sleeping? I am not putting down, or judging these concepts. If your child is asking questions, he/she is all ready having doubt's, why not just explain, it's a bout tradition, and fun, if you lie, they will figure it out later any way.

Distract him by telling him the Easter Bunny isn't real.

i tell them the truth.
because i want to have integrity.
i never want to lie to my child
because i dont' want them to distrust me
or to think i might be lying about something later.
tell the kid the truth. and why the spirit of santa
is important and why you use that myth in your
family and what it means to you.
i mean don't you want your kids to really trust and
believe you when you tell them things?
so why lie? it is a terrible idea.
