An ipod is an Mp3 player basically. Ipods come with too many restrictions high price and low battery life for one but have intuative controls and brand appeal. Actually an Ipod has more memory than you really need and I dont see why you'ld want to watch video on a crap little screen. If you have that much free time there has to be something better to do.
Get him an mp3 player with at least 1 GB of memory, flash players hold less but have less problems and are cheaper. Expect to pay at least 50 bucks and most of the time you'll end up buying aftermarket headphones after you try the ones that come with the player.

I have an old RCA and have dropped, stepped on, fallen on, gotten rained on, numerous times and it still works fine gets hours of play on a single AAA battery too so its cheap and easy to keep it playing all day.

You can find any other brand for just as good as an iPod but much less. But with 13 year olds (my brother is that age as well) they have to have what everyone else at school has which is the iPod. So I think that would make him the happiest although it will cost a bit more.

At the age of 13, Kids are more interested on present TRENDS. IPod is best option for a 13 year old as it is present trend, price does not make 13 year old happy. I prefer video IPod(30gb or 80gb) and it is robust and works very good.

The second option is Zune.

they basically do the same thing however mp3 players are slightly cheaper due to the fact with the ipod you are paying for the name....at walmart you can get a ipod shuffle for $79 and it will hold about 500 songs...2gb nano will hold about 1000 songs and costs $148...4gb nano will hold about 2000 songs and cost $198...or a 30gb video ipod will hold numerous songs + video $248....you can find mp3 players that have the same amount of capacity for songs at about 1/2 the price because they arent ipods

For a 13 year old, an Ipod Nano.
They're not as expensive as the Ipod,
and 13 year olds tend to lose these
things at school, or if they're like my brother,
trade for other things.

I'm 14 and I got an ipod for graduation. I treat it like a baby. It's the best thing I have in my room besides my cell phone!

The i-pod is brand recognition, and works as well as any other MP3 on the market. You can recieve the same quality for less with other brands, but will not have the brand recognition (like starbucks). I recommend the Toshiba Gigabeat. This MP3 is just as good as the i-pod and cost less.
