think of latitude and longititue lines as sort of a grid system, every where on earth has a unique corrdinate, think of something like the game battleship, or an x-y coordiante grid. they use it to help with navigation in the oceans, and use it for other navigation and data collection purposes. geographers use it to make maps and use lat. and long. lines to go back and forth for other coordinate systems and other ways of mapping places and events.
