Hi. For one thing scientists have just announced that they have genetically engineered cotton to make the seeds edible. (They are normally poisonous.) The seed could feed about 500,000,000 people. This will make the growth and export more desirable.

As far as I know all the Fair Trade scheme does is make sure a decent chunk of the profits goes to the people who produce the cotton.
