There are a number of reasons that people become homeless.

Personal choice. Some make a choice not to have a permanent residence. Many people who respond that they "prefer" the homeless lifestyle suffer from mental illness, trauma or have adapted to the lifestyle and the response reflects a socially-desirable response or justification

Drug and alcohol addiction: Individuals who are incapable of maintaining employment and managing their lives effectively due to prolonged and severe drug and/or alcohol abuse make up a substantial percentage of the U.S. homeless population.

Income inequality/ High cost of living: Jobs that pay near or at the minimum wage simply do not provide sufficent income to pay for housing, utilities, and food.

Downsizing/Unemployment. Jobs can be very challenging to find because of age discrimination, bad credit, being overqualified, being under qualified or criminal background

Prison discharge: Often the formerly incarcerated are socially isolated from friends and family and have few resources. Employment is often difficult for those with a criminal record.

Escaping domestic abuse, including sexual, physical and mental abuse: Victims who flee from abuse often find themselves without a home. Abused children also have a higher chance of succumbing to a drug addiction, which contributes to difficulties in establishing a residence. In 1990 a study found that half of homeless women and children were fleeing abuse.

Foster Care background: Former wards of the State/Childrens Services turn 18 years of age and suddenly have no home.

Natural disaster, such as in the case of thousands of New Orleans, Louisiana residents losing their homes to Hurricane Katrina.

Did someone actually blame this on a failure to redistribute wealth in America and then cite as proof the fact that there are poor and rich areas in our country. Amazing!

Redistribution of wealth does occur and I'm sure it has our founding fathers rolling in their graves. This country was built upon the idea that the government was supposed to leave you alone and merely provide for defense. Why do people want to mix it with socialism?

Consider this... If doctors, entrepreneurs and scientists who spend many years of sleepless nights to reach their positions had their salaries capped at $30k per year with all surplus money going to people whose careers pay less, what incentive would they have for enduring the torment required to achieve?

The government's role is to keep you safe while you pursue your own dreams. It is not supposed to be Robin Hood. I agree that it is difficult to land a position without an address or appropriate attire, but not as difficult as becoming a recording artist if you are blind. Somehow Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and others made it. Redistribution of wealth (stealing from those who work and giving it to those who do not) is a wicked social cancer that produces successive generations of ungrateful dependents who have no ambition and lack sufficient motivation to move.

At this point in time, homelessness is mostly due to substance abuse, child runaways, mental illness, and/or a lack of preparedness to survive in society. Jobs are available for those who bother to develop skills (formal education is optional in many cases). Lastly, homelessness exists for the same reason we had so many people on welfare before the Contract with America limited it to 2 years. They just couldn't get jobs (wink wink) until the government stopped sending those monthly checks. Now they are employed and the unemployment rates are at record lows.

There is one type of job that is always avalable to anyone who can be polite and demonstrate a work ethic - SALES.

Peace to those who want it.

Yes, there are jobs available, but have you ever tried to get a job without an address? How about without some nice looking clothes or the basic shower?

All they need is a little help, but no one is willing to help them.
