A parent or student refers the child to a team of teachers.
The teachers develop a list of interventions (plan of action) to help the student. THis usually means a behavior plan, (reward system) extra tutoring, modifyind assignment.
For several weeks documentation is made to determine if the student is progressing.
The team decides to do further testing or not.
The student is then given a vision and hearing to determine that the child is not struggling do to these issues
If it is determine the child does not need glasses or hearing aide, then the child is given several tests. Usually a receptive language, expressive language, Speech screening, an achievement test, and then an IQ test.
To qualify for a learning disability, there has to be a significance difference in the scores of the IQ and the performance test.
(usually a difference of 15 points or more)
The child could qualify for a language disability based on the language tests.
Children who have ADD or ADHD can qualify with the label of "Other health impaired"
Then you have the students who are mentally challenged (IQ of 70 or lower)
THere are many many labels and qualifyers for children with special needs.
But i Gave you the basics.
Special Ed kids are not dumb, they just learn differently.

People do not 'become' special ed, they are people who have one or more disabilities that are at some point - identified. A referral must take place...by a parent, teacher or someone close to child for something called an IAT (intervention assistance team). That team of people - which includes the teacher, principal, parent, and other professionals investigate interventions/accommodations they can use to assist the student. Time is allowed (usually about 6 weeks or more) to assess if the interventions and accommodations are working to solve the issues. If it appears that more help is needed...a referral to a testing process called MFE (Multi factored evaluation) is done. Medical testing; intelligence testing; cognitive and academic achievement is tested...and other things deemed necessary (speech and language, occupational issues). Once testing is complete - that team of people meets to discuss the results. The government has 12 recognised categories considered disabilities...those are compared to the test scores and observations that were done on the student by the team. The team determines if this student has a disability or not. If so...they sign documentation to verify it, and the student is now eligible for special education services. Professionals will then write what is called and IEP (Individual Education Plan) to try and address the most prevalent needs of the student, and provide services to help that child.

some belongings you should do. confer including your mom and father about your instructors and how you're dealt with when you're receiving particular preparation amenities then you truly both have an IEP or a 504 plan. What you instructors favor to do must be written in there. At your age you could attend the conferences because it is your preparation it truly is being suggested and also you may voice your court docket situations interior the room yet as well tell the way you experience. next you could talk including your coaching counselors about the way different toddlers and instructors make you experience. they're there that ought to really help you ensure circumstances like this. you could stop thinking your self as a particular preparation youngster. you're a toddler who makes use of particular preparation. it truly is a posh way of affirming that you learn otherwise than a lot of different toddlers. that is type of a similar as affirming maximum childrens are accurate surpassed yet some are left surpassed and they ought to tutor their paper otherwise than the right surpassed toddlers. you also ought to connect some communities be it choir or football or drama or wrestling. only make confident that is a few thing that you truly imagine you'll like. once you've anger themes then perhaps a pastime must be best for you that way you could take out your aggression and connect a collection. also you should take responsibility for your moves. in the journey that your instructor tells you to stop talking and also you do not then you truly receives in problem. you could blame that on the instructor yet you want to imagine about what ought to you've performed otherwise to stay away from the finished difficulty.

A person does not become special ed. A child may qualify for special education if they have a learning disability and need extra help or lower level classes. Special Education is also for children with disabilities and disorders. Testing determines proper placement.A few people used the word "retarded". I really hate that word. Developmentally delayed or mentally challenged is better.

I used to be in Special ED from k-12 and I am partial deaf. Only thing i don't like about what I expericed was being four years behind on my ed and when I got to college, I knew nothing until i had to get a lot of help tutoring and all. Best rewarding thing about being in speical ed is that I can teach others that I am same human as them and treat me no different because of my hearing loss.

I don't know how many times I see this, but special ed does NOT equal low IQ. Many of the students I work with are very bright.
When people have a physical disability, or a mental disablility they are put in special ed programs by parents, or social workers who are familiar with the persons needs and work with the programs.

"they're born mentally ill, aka retarded. meaning they have an IQ of less than I think 50. "
now someone is a *****....
I have been a sped ever since i was in grade 3 (i'm in grade 12 now) and i'm getting all 90's in my classes and i find that i often have to explain things to the other kids in my class who arent speds about the work because THEY dont get it.
Plus you have to have a certian level on intellegence to be label a sped (like higher than 70%) its just that we learn in a different way, thats all. I even help americans with their math homework over the internet who are classified as talented and skipped a few grades.
Now for those people who "think" they know what sped is: you should really work on your definitons and not post your "answers"
oh and by the way i have a 125 IQ and i personally have never asked for any of my projects to be modifyed or to get special treatment. the only thing i get is to sign up for time and a half for exams. when i tell people that i'm a sped they are in disbelieve, and same when alot of kids say that they are speds.

If you mean children under special education...
Children who have special needs are considered to go under special education.
There are several classifications of special education (disabilities/exceptionalities):
1. Mental Retardation (ex. slow-learners, those with down syndrome)
2. Hearing Impairment (those whose hearing loss or reduction is reducing or affecting their academic performances)
3. Visual Impairment (those whose vision loss or reduction is reducing or affecting their academic performances)
4. Emotional or Behavioral disorder (those with schizophrenia, bipolar tendencies, autism, etc)
5. Learning Disabilities (dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc.)
6. Physical Impairment (ex. those with cerebral palsy, crippled, etc.)
7. Mental Giftedness. Yes even gifted children are considered to be special individuals. (those who excel in any intelligence area or have higher performance than their regular peers [ex. music, logic, spatial, nature, etc *there's a thing called multiple intelligence test])
If you mean how educators become special educators, you just have to take up several special education courses. And you should have a master's degree majoring in any disabilty for you be a bonified SpEd teacher.

I disagree with some of the content in some of the answers you have received. There can be many reasons why a person qualifies for special education and this does not automatically imply that they are "retarded" or have gross cognitive deficits. It does not mean they were 'dropped' on their heads as babies. One wonderful example is a woman named Temple Grandin. She is a woman with autism. Temple Grandin has a Ph.D. in animal science and lectures extensively on her life as a woman with autism. There are many gifted and inspiring individuals with "special" needs.

well i am special ed. how its been explained to me is.......kids with a difficulty doing something need a little more to have things be more fair and at the same level as everyone else. its not because they are stupid and have a low IQ. i actualy have a really high one. i just cant write it down to explain. there are alot of different learning styles and everyone is different.
the process of geting into Special ED is kind of difficult. you have to have a lot of tests, or some kind of "title" like Dyslexia, or Autism.
