Get a Haynes repair manual! I changed the rack on my '89 cavalier a few years ago. It can be done at home but there is a lot to consider. They said it would slide out from under the driver side fender,,,, it did come out but it sure didn't SLIDE. The most difficult part was reattaching the steering column to the rack itself. There is very little room to work under the dash and you MUST get the steering wheel straight on the rack or you will have to drive with the wheel ****** to one side forever. It's also important to get the floor gasket back in place right or you will have water coming in your car every time you drive through a puddle, and cold air in the winter.Lots to think about! Last one I saw done took 7 hours for an experienced mechanic with all the right tools. It took more than 2 hours just to bleed the air out of the fluid when he was done.
Not one I would try at home.
