It is an age-old method of inducing labor. It works for some people and not for others. My daughter used it three weeks ago at 38 weeks and our little grandson was born with no problems the next day.

If you use castor oil DO NOT drink it. First off it tastes nasty, secondly it causes diarrhea and you do not want that while you are in labor. If you are going to use it rub it on your belly and cover the area w/ saran wrap and place a heating pad or moist wash clothes over it. It still helps to induce labor w/ out the bad side effects. I will warn you it is messy though! Also, rubbing your nipples for extended periods of time, sex and walking help to induce contractions also.

Dont want to discourage you from trying what you want to but the effects of castor oil on the baby is unknown, and it gives you a nasty case of diarrhea. I know you are impatient and now might be the convenient time for you but your baby may not want to come out yet :) have you explained your situation to your doctor? I was in a similar situation with my 2 year old and he agreed to induce my labor at 38 weeks on a scheduled day so that we could plan. Maybe you should ask the OB?

That was the very first pamphlet I got from the doctor on all the dangers of castor oil. I know it makes labor hard, more painful and longer. There was a TON of possible birth defects to the baby from distress, respiratory problems, heart abnormalities and other things. I read the info 2 years ago and just knew I wouldn't take it, so I never kept it! My best advice....WAIT! You'll figure something out, but it's not worth the possible problems...right?

hey there i have had three children, my last two i used castor oil yes it does work but not for all people, the side effects from it would be vomittind and diarrea, i didnt get any symptoms from it, your contractions will be pretty strong and it will be fast. I took it and about 4 hrs later for both children the contractions started and tehy were 5 minutes apart. being one to two cm dilated 75 % thinned out it definately could work for you, take 2 table spoons of it and then have some water or something to wash it down its pretty thick stuff. If that doesnt work within 4 hours i wouldnt take anymore cause obvioulsy it will nto work for you. My doctor told me to take it and the pharmasists say to take it as we'll. Good luck and hope that helps you.

Yes, it is an old fashioned remedy and it is totally outmoded.

I drank 4 bottles of the stuff when my old country doctor wanted to "induce" labor and all it did was give me the runs.

We did this twice and it did not work. This was back in 1967.

Best thing to do is walk a lot.

Castor oil won't induce labor if your body is not ready. You should try Red raspberry leaf tea 6 times a day, lots of walking, and sex will also help(Semen will help your cervix ripen faster), you could also try using a breast pump or nipple stimulation several times a day for 1 hour at a time.

I have been told that using castor oil to induce labor can be dangerous for the baby. It makes you have a bowel movement and it can do the same to the baby. Which can lead to him breathing it in while inside and he may have to be in ICU.

Castor Oil is poison don't even think about taking it!
If you want to induce call your doctor and tell him your situation you might be able to convince him to do it the right way.

It's not a good idea. I just got thru with my childbirth classes and its fresh in my mind... the instructor said.. "if it makes you poo, it will make the baby poo too". and it's bad if the baby takes in the muconium. So I would say just let nature take its course. I don't think there's any insurance that it would work that quickly anyway!
