I want to use a laptop (with Windows xp SP2 Professional ) to a Desktop (XP Home) to tranfer data.

1: you need a p2p networking cable(ask local vendor)
2: connect both ends one to laptop and other to desktop
3: Run start>accessories>communications>network setup wizard
select type of netork as other in two cases and in the end just finish the wizrard(on both computers)
4 search for laptop from desktop or vise-versa
if found it is connected if any problem comes up mail me

You didn't mentioned any server, so i guess that you only had two computers running DESKTOP and Laptop. Now, if you have installed any firewall both of them or one of them then you must disable that firewall so they can able to see each other. You may need also a cable to be plug into your NIC , don't use cross over RJ45 cable bec. it doesn't work if you connect them directly bec. cross over cable needs a hub. Use straight cable. Check some website out for the cabling design.
You must check also if the Workgroup and make that they are the same name. After you done then try ping followed by the ip address of the other computer and see if they can talk each other. If there is a reply then good to go and if not check the cabling as well as the workgroup. Note, set the ip adress. i prefer 192.168.0.1 and the other computer should 192.168.0.2

You would have to:

A. Set up a hardware network
B. Set up the network on both computers with the Windows networking.
C. "Share" the folder of files or data that you want to access on each computer.

At this point you would see the other computer in "My Network Places" and could access the files as if they were part of your own computer.
