When speaking face-to-face with someone, you don't always have that extra time to think about how to form a response. When talking with someone online, you miss out on a lot of nonverbal and often unconscious communication like facial expressions and body gestures. Even voice inflections, while perceivable over the telephone, are absent in online exchange. I would say most people learn social skills while young and wouldn't normally forget them, but it is still a good idea to get out of the house from time to time. So many more folks are chatting online, only time will tell what kind of massive effect it will have on society.
