Dr. O!!
I just answered this VERY Question while answering a similar one!!!
I totally agree with you that the US installed the Islamic republic to thwart the Soviets. They should have left Iran alone and allowed them to have a real revolution. They did the same with Bin laden; they supported him and funded him and while he was on the US payroll he was called a freedom fighter! Then once again ally turned to foe and labels were switched. If the US would interfere less into other government's political events and allow democracy to flourish without any artificial pretences, the world would be much safer to the natives of those countries as well as US interests in the long run.
It's nice to see intelligent questions and answers.

People who are flabergasted are just unaware. they don't know about the 1953 revolution in Iran. They don't know and I wish so bad that in the age of information that they would just get a few books and become informed. I suggest to anyone reading this answer to read Steven Kinzer's "All the Shah's Men". Now that old CIA documenta are no longer privileged information we can educate ourselves and find out what our government is doing and why we should question things before they're out of hand.

No, I don't agree. The US was a friend of the Shah who was overthrown by Khomeini. How could the US install him when we opposed him. Your statement is loopy.
