I recommend the Xbox 360. It's been out for over a year now, so you will have no problems locating one in stores. It comes in two models, a $300 one and a $400 one. The only difference is the higher priced model comes with a detachable hard drive. It has quite a bit of games on the market, and it has an excellent online game system set up by Microsoft. Easily my favorite game console.
The PS3 may be a great console down the road, but right now it's lacking in good games since it just came out. It is very rare, and I doubt you will find one in the stores. Expect to pay Between $500-600 dollars for one if you do. It does have the benefit of a built in Blue Ray player, if watching Hi-Definition movies are your thing.

I would say the Xbox 360 is better cause it costs lest, the Core pack is 300.00$ and the regular pack is 400.00$.The reason why the Core is less than the regular pack is cause it doesnt come with a hard drive, i have two regular Xbox 360's that came with the hard drive and they work really well.So if you got an Xbox 360 i would say to buy the pack with the hard drive cause then you dont have to keep buying memory cards! Here's a link to tell you more about the Core and regular pack:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/xbox360customize.htm
Also here's a list of all the Xbox 360 games:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/xbox360games.htm
My pick for the Xbox 360 games i think you should get is Gears of War, Halo 2, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Dead or Alive 4, Saints Row, Dead Rising, Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo Elements of Power, Ghost Recon Advanced War Fighter etc..

DEFINTELY PS3 MAN. ps3 is $500 for 20 gb and $600 for 60 gb. ps3 however is a blu-ray player which is $1000 at any store. Ps3 has better picture than Xbox 360(but only a little bit) xbox is $300 core and $400 preminum. xbox can not play HD-dvd but you can by it separately which is $500 for core and $600 for premium. so ps3 is way much cheaper. you save $1000 on a ps3 and lose $200 if you buy a HD-DVD for the xbox 360.
