History of Stars (the flag, on quarters, army uniforms, being graded "one gold star"....etc)?

i am just wondering what is the symbol of stars? why do we use that as a symbol for good things? when was this started? has it changed, like everything else, over the years? what does it mean now? how do you know.......THANK YOU!! i just have soo many questions in my head!

hmm i think that since we look up and see the stars above and view them as beinging in the heavens that somehow the symbol of the star has become something that means good....like the heavens...
