Everyone keeps telling me NOT to buy any clothes as they all have girls and are planning on giving me their clothes. So I've refrained from buying anything except 1 outfit that just made me gush and my mom has bought 3 that just made her gush. And I found some onsies for a steal at the store so I grabbed them...But I have yet to see any clothes from those folks and its making me nervous as my baby is due in Feb. So I've decided to buy the basics and anything that I just feel I absolutely can't live w/out...simply because if these folks don't follow through I'll have to be out there buying baby clothes the day I get out of the hospital. People mean well, but how do you know that they will follow through?!? February is way to cold to be having a nekked baby...lol.
I say shop away, within your budget or below and mainly for necessities. But don't necessarily take the tags off anything and wash until you are absolutely sure that your child will wear it. A friend of mine got so many outfits w/ her first that she didn't wash all of them and was able to take them back and exchange for larger sizes as the baby grew.

I got way, way, way too many. Some my son was born too big for. I probably had 20 onsies I never dipped into!
During those first few weeks, you need tons of pjs (I liked the gowns with elastic below their feet). To be honest, stuffing a newborn into a little outfit (like jeans & little jackets) is a pain they look uncomfortable. You cover 'em up with a blanket most of the time when you go out anyway. Cute one-piece rompers rule for newborns!
Yes, those outfits are ridiculously cute. Do yourself a favor, go ahead and buy them, just pick 6 months and larger, so you have fun stuff to pull out as your baby grows.

actually, my situation was a bit opposite. i had lots of 0-3 month stuff, but not too many newborn stuff.
i had to go to wal-mart and get a bunch of newborn sized pants and onesies to put on him until he gained a few pounds to wear his 0-3 stuff. now, he is only 2 1/2 months and wearing 3 and 6 months stuff!!! don't buy too much b/c they grow fast. oh, and buy stuff that easy to get on and off b/c you'll be so concerned with diapers and feeding that you won't care about the baby's style until he's a few weeks old. once you get the hang of the parent thing, then you'll get into the style thing.
oh, i recommend old navy and target for lots of cute clothes. especially if you're having a boy. there is never very good selections for boys!!
take care:)
also, i'd spend some money on diapers. before i had my little guy i bought a pack everytime i went to the store. that way i knew i'd be stocked up for a while.
i recommend pampers baby dry in the green pack. the newborn swaddlers are nice, but once they get to a size 1, go to the baby dry. oh, and as you buy them, be sure to buy different sizes. you'll be amazed how fast they grow!!
oh, and if you end up with a few packs of size 1 and you're already in size 2, just exchange the unopened packs at walmart:)
take care.

I used to buy the cheaper cute outfits because I knew friends and family would buy a bunch as well. It all worked out because as others have said poop and spit up happen way to much, you will be changing em alot. Stock up on some Sprayn Wash, it works good to get all the baby stains out of clothes.

You can never have too many clothes...but start buying them a little bigger as they grow out of the newborn things quickly...look toward 3 months or even 6 months (you can always roll teh pants and sleeves up) you can save yourself some money that way.

Yes. I had so many people give me adorable baby clothes that my baby didn't get to wear them all. Some of them I exchanged for larger sizes, but many of them remain unused. It's hard to resist those darling outfits, but try to use moderation when indulging the urge to buy. That way you end up with a nice variety, but hopefully not so many that you end up having spent tons of money on clothes you can't use.

I got so many clothes that my son didn't get to wear all of them. Do not buy newborn clothes. They grow out of them so fast. Wait to see what you get before you buy your own stuff.

I am pregnant with my third child, and my MIL is going baby-shopping crazy. It's her first grandchild (a girl- just what she wanted!), and she's bought EVERYTHING. I have at least 30 onesies, 10 gowns, 50 blankets, more socks than you can shake a stick at, and 4 fancy dresses that this kid will probably never wear, except to have her pictures taken.
I've bought her a hooded towel set for the bath, and a 3 bibs.

I got a few, but mainly things like footed pajamas and basics. AND..I didn't get a ton. But what I did find out is that there are times when you certainly could change clothing a few times a day! Oh yes...the spit-up and that......FUN FUN!!!
