You say you NEED to get your boss a gift.......hmmm.....why NEED? Is it an expectation from him?
How about buying a gift from a charity such as Oxfam....you can get a brood of 10 chickens for ten pounds or a goat for twenty four. These gifts can make a real difference to underpriveliged people. Visit the Oxfam website http://www.oxfam.org.uk/press/releases/unwrapped241104.htm

Let your boss know that you have donated the gift in his name.

I got my boss a manicure set last year because he didn't have one and was always using other items to fix hang nails, etc. He loved it!

I usually get him and his wife something consumable. Since my boss is the same kind of guy as your boss, the consumable gift is usually something relatively healthy...nuts, fruit, coffee or tea...which are all things they like.

He obviously appreciates the best, how about the best steaks or coffee or fish. As previously mentioned everyone likes to eat. Narrow it down to what he likes and make it small but the "best". Maybe you could enclose a note that says "picked the best for the best." One year my husbands assistant bought him 4 terrific strip steaks. I know it sounds funny but he loved them and I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to make dinner that night!
