You could wear a regular suit. I haven't been to many black tie functions. Try a dressier suit, white shirt, silk tie, etc.

I think suits could work, but as another poster pointed out - will they match? Do you care if they match? Something else to look into with rentals, a lot of places will give you the groom's tux free if you rent 4 others. So that would be $92/each for 5 tuxedos. Don't forget to check if the rental fee includes ALL items - some places charge extra for renting the shoes, vest, cumberbund, tie, etc. You could try going to a local men's suit retailer. They may give you a deal on multiple suits. Apparel retail is significantly down right now so an owner would be delighted to sell 4 or 5 suits in one swoop. Then you could make sure they all are matching or similar enough & the guys could keep them. If you rent, I have to give a huge thumbs down to Afterhours. I don't know if you have one near you, but avoid at all costs. My groom almost had to wear a suit, because they forgot to order his tuxedo! Then they wanted to charge me for rush shipping & emergency alterations! I later found out others had similar experiences with Afterhours.

There are so many variations of the tuxedo, different coloured satin/silk stripes on the side of the trouser leg smart bow ties, also cumberbands (an aquired taste) can be added, you can buy a tux from matalan at the moment for £50.00 and customise it or you can hire one from somewhere like Burton's for £45.00 approx. I think the best look is a nice plain black one with no frills and a nice shirt and plain tie, classic is best for this type of suit - but make sure it is fitted well, no baggy bits please......hope you get what you want!

You could wear the tux, since its a black tie, but make it look more stylish.... maybe don't wear the tie, just the jacket and pants, and wear a white shirt, but with the top button undone and wear a black undershirt.... that way you still look nice and fancy but you have your own personal touch to the outfit.

You see lots of footballers in white evening jackets/black trousers. Black tie can also mean whacky bow ties/cummerbunds in bright colours so that would also get you away from the pengy look? Failing that, you could wear the kilt or some other relevant national dress. It is also ok to wear dress uniform if that is relevant to you.

There is no alternative to a tuxedo, which is formal attire. If you are attending an event and it is formal attire you have to wear a tuxedo, or else you will look like a fool AND embarass your date, and you DEFINETLY won't get sexed afterward!

A velvet jacket. Unless you are skinny or fat. Looks good if you have a good bod, but rubbish if you are normal.
