It all depends on what she likes.
There are two main categories of anime: the really serious
stuff (tends to be gory+more mature) and the truly ridiculous gut-busters. An example of a more serious anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Something that is more geared towards humour is Excel saga (totally crazy)
Serious:
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Noein
Akira
Roujin Z
Ghost in the Shell
MEMORIES
Howl's Moving Castle
Tokyo Godfathers
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Metropolis
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Steamboy
Grave of the Fireflies
Funny:
Naruto
Fruits Basket
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1/2
Outlaw Star
Paranoia Agent
Fullmetal Alchemist
(sorry, I don't know too many)

I reccomend Fullmetal Alchemist (it's got a manga and anime form, the manga is the original, but the plots vary a lot.)
Despite what a lot of people think, it isn't just another manga with characters that girls like--its really got a lot of depth in it with just the right amount of humor.
Or, if serious stuff isn't her type, why not try the series Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)? Again, there's a manga and an anime and it's quite hot at the moment. Interesting plot and characters make it an addictive series.

Some people have said Fruits Basket and D.N. Angel. I completely agree. Try Chrono Crusade also, manga or anime.
However, I just wanted to inform you that Paranoia Agent is by no means a comedy. It's a very adult oriented series. By that I mean sexual themes and extreme violence. Don't get me wrong, I personally put it on my list of favs, but not for a 16 year old girl.
Also, I wouldn't recommend Outlaw Star or Ghost in the Shell. GitS would probably bore her, and OS is more for boys than girls.

Even though I'm just 13, I have a lot of experience with music, gifts, girls, holidays, and other stuff. I've been in these situations, a lot. Girls like a lot of things from jewelry, music, video games, movies, perfume. Judge her! If she's the social, dating, pretty type, get her some girly stuff like perfume, jewelry, clothes, etc. But, if she's the goth, dark type get her some rock music, her favorite band CD or something. But if you still don't know, just ask her what she wants. Don't sneak in her room when she's not home to see what she likes cuz she'll never trust you, but if you can, go in her room, act like you're not doing anything and try looking around unnoticed, it works, trust me. A lot of girls I know LOVE music, so get her an iPod, or a Zune MP3 player, she'll love it, depending on what kind of girl she is. But if you're her father, if you can, get her an iPod Touch!! She'll DEFINENTLY love that because I do!! but that's just my opinion and I love music.

It depends. Mangas are usually much more adult than the shows. Even Sailor Moon is pretty violent, but if thats not a problem... I suggest Inuyasha, which is a great action/adventure/romance series. If you don't mind the sexual stuff, Chobits and Paradise Kiss are also two great girly mangas. One more, Mars is kick a$$. That one she would probably love.

These are all popular and I've read all of them, highly recommended for girls that age ^_^:
1. Hanazakari no kimitachi e{Hana Kimi} (manga)- girl going to an all-boys school, i cant find fault in this, except that it has several volumes. must-read
2. Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo {Kare Kano} (anime, manga) - well this is absolutely funny, highschool couple going through life.
3. Fruits Basket (anime, manga)-guys turning to zodiac animals when hugged by Tohru, the main character. manga is very long though.
4. DN Angel (anime, manga) - kinda detective story, comedy and romance. and Dark is gorgeous.
5. Zettai Kareshi {Absolute Boyfriend} (manga) - absolutely funny! this is my favorite manga.
6. Full wo Sagashite (anime, manga) - great artwork for manga, storyline in anime is different although both are good. she'll especially love it if she's into pop idols.
all manga/anime series are complete.
btw, its very nice of you to think of it as her xmas gift. best of luck.

Hmm, she might like "Ah, My Goddess" or "Last Exile". Both are Anime. You have to be careful when buying anime for an anime fan though, you never know... she might already have what you get her. But both of those suggestions have excellent storylines (Ah, My Goddess" is very sweet and gentle, "Last Exile" is high adventure, a ripping good yarn, but is also seven disks and might be a little pricey.)

KARE KANO is the best one out thereeee!!! it also deals with like teenage love issues and relationship ups and downs also, prolly the most famous one is fruitsbasket. its about the zodiac, and each person of a household named "sohma" turns into that animal if theyre hugged by someone of the opp. sex. sounds kinda weird but really anyone who reads it ends up falllinjg in love with it! demon diary, DNAngel, and peachgirl. OMGSH another REALLy good teen shoujo is HOT GIMMICK. really good. reeeeeeallly reeeeeeallly good. i definetely suggest that the most. prollythe most perfect one. errr if they dont seem to really like love story ones, death note is a reallly good manga. ts really CLEVER and seriously so cool. and impresses any intelligent girl. ai yazawa has written two really popular manga as well. paradise kiss (cover looks scary dont wry bou it xD) is about fashion AND love. only 5 volumes too! so its a good pic. there is an ongoingone called NANA where 2 diff. girls go to tokyo meet each other have the same name, and its about how they help each other out.. theyre like 23? i think? i love those two series. just superb, and i havent heard one bad thing about those two. but still.
