A Christmas present us supposed to be a surprise. It's meant to be a thoughtful gift from one to another. If you asked the receiver of said gift, it wouldn't be much of a surprise. :)

Best wishes.

Because they feel bad that they don't already know. The thinking goes like this: if I spent enough time getting to know you and what kind of things you like, I should be able to think of a good gift that you'll like. But since I can't, I must not know you as well as I should, and that's my fault. So I'll feel bad about it, and ask someone else for help who might know you better than I do.

My parents have never had this problem, and every year, they ask me straight out, what do I want for Xmas & my birthday. My wife's family never ask, they just get you something and hope for the best. I always get what I want from my folks, but my wife thinks it's like "cheating" somehow, that they should have to guess instead of just asking me. I just think the whole argument's kind of silly.

I got past this by starting a "wishlist" on Amazon. My family knows it's there and they can check it whenever they want without having to ask me. It works great.

Maybe they want to keep it a surprise for the person. Or maybe if they don't have a lot of money and they know they can't get the person what they want they are lookjing for cheap suggestions. I guess the main reason for asking is because a majority of people will say "I dunno" when you ask what they want. That's what I always say because I really don';t care, it's just the thought that counts.

I've had people get mad at me when I've asked them for ideas. I guess they just assume I know what they want.

They want ideas. It's fun to be able to surprise the person that you are giving to.
