It depends. If they specifically ask for it on the application, then you definately have to tell them. A lot of times they want to know not because of what grades you got, but they want to know if you've been kicked out of another school before. (Especially for alcohol related things, or for cheating/plagerizing - most schools won't touch you with a three-meter pole after that).

If you lie about it, they might not find out. But if they do find out, it's grounds for being kicked out - and being kicked out of a school makes it very tough to get back in.

The best thing to do, really, is talk to a guidence counselor either at your current school or (if you don't have one) the school you want to attend, and discuss it. If your only goal is to get a fresh start on the GPA and that's the only reason you don't want to "tell" them, you might be able to arrange it so that none of your previous coursework is transfered over (which will mean it won't count, to your new school)

Be aware if you're planning later to apply to med school, law school, grad school, or anything like that, they WILL ask for EVERY school you attended, and you will have to tell them.

Most schools will require you to send any transcripts that you have; if you are planning on re-enrolling in your former school, they probably have your old GPA on file.

Fortunately, you start out with a clean slate (in terms of GPA) for each school you attend.

Best of luck to you as you pursue your education.
