I just bought an 18 year old condominium and I have never lit one before. Next to the fireplace is a switch whose function I do not know. Please help.

There is a good chance that switch next to the fireplace operates it, some have thermostats also. If you dont' know how long it's been since the fireplace has been used, I would highly suggest having the gas company come out. They will make sure the pilot light is lit correctly and there is not any lint or dust that can catch fire. Be safe.

There usually a knob in the floor or somewhere to turn on the gas, it recessed and require a special tool that square shaped to fit the knob. I chrome most times and take about a 3/8 inch tool. See link below for a picture. If, there a Switch, like a light switch, it usually for a fan/blower.

Likely the switch turns on the fireplace. Mine is the same.
If it doesn't turn on when you flick the switch, the pilot light is probably out, and you will need to read the instructions for re-lighting.
