My computer's been reading CD's fine until recently. When I insert a CD into the drive, lights just blink but the CD is not read. It doesn't run, nor does it even show up on "My computer" Please help!

Surprisingly, there are times when using a cleaning CD, with the little brush on it, will cure this problem.

Otherwise go to your device manager by clicking Start / Run and type in
devmgmt.msc
and hit Enter or click OK. At this device manager, expand the DVD/CD ROM drives and see if your drive has a yellow exclamation markt by it. If it does, then you have a hardwar problem

In addition to the suggestions listed already, I'd like to add one more....if you do the cleaning, etc, and the drive still malfunctions, you can try this next procedure.
Using the device manager, locate the drive that's giving you trouble, right click on that drive's listing, and choose "Uninstall". Go through that process and then exit from there. Now reboot the computer. Windows should see the drive as "New Hardware" and reload the appropriate driver for the drive. Then try inserting a CD again and see if it works. If not, then, as another answerer said, you may have to spring for a new drive. At this point you might as well get yourself a DVD/CD drive, as the prices have gotten very reasonable for them of late. Good luck.

First, the bad news. It's probably busted. You probably need a new one. Luckily, if you're using a desktop PC, you can get a new CD reader as cheap as $20 and it's a plug-and-replace item. Easy to install into your PC.

It's also possible that your drive is not being recognized by your system due to misconfiguration. I don't have enough time to explain how to check your CMOS to see if the drive is even being seen by your system, I apologize.

Before replacing it, make sure all the power and cables are all connected well. It might just be a loose connection.

Good luck.
