Katja sounds german to me. When my husband and i were in Germany due to him being in the military, we knew a lady there named Katja and its a very pretty german name. I do not think it sounds "ghetto" at all, but thats me! Good luck!

No, not at all. Katja, Sonja, and Marja are really where "j" is substituted for "i" (mostly in eastern europe) but most people will not know that in the US. ---Not sure about in Germany. To me, the closeset "ghetto" version would be Kadija, which is because of black muslims. Kadija is a nice name. It is international. Katja would be fine except that it sound like "Caught ya" and she may not want boys saying that to her. Katia can be shortened to Tia or Katie.

Don't worry about what people think. My daughter's name is Nour. People mis-pronounce and misspell it all the time (Nora is the most common), but I love it and it is special to us. I think the name Katja is beautiful and I'm sure your baby is going to be beautiful. I don't even know what it means to have a "ghetto" name? It's just a version of Kate, and if people don't like it, that's their problem. If you are uncomfortable about it, though, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to give her that name.

Is that pronounced more like Katja (ryming with gotcha)
or
Katja (sounds similar to ketchup)?
I'm not trying to be an a**, I'm just wondering. EIther way it doesn't sound ghetto.

Katja is a beautiful name.

Katja is very unique-sounding, but not made up, so she should be fine.

Someone at the hospital near me named their baby Gangsta....

....that is a ghetto name.

Congratulations on your baby and your good taste. :)

Names aren't ghetto - people are. If you raise her properly, with values and respect, her name won't matter. Katja is beautiful.

Do people assume all black (or part-black) children are from the ghetto? And why would care about the opinions of people who would think that way?
