The process can be explained by drawing from the theory of Natural selection:
The female reproductive system produces millions of eggs starting from puberty. These eggs are created and stored within the Ovaries and released into the falopian tubes at the rate of (normally) one egg once a month, 14-16 days after start of mensuration. The single egg that is released, goes through cut-throat (pardon the expression) competition till it is released. This is nature's way of controlling population: If all eggs were to be released, we would reproduce like hamsters!!
Similarly, millions of sperms get released into the female vagina during intercourse (Or artificial insemination, as the case may be). Most of them Die in the acidity of the vagina, or in the cervix. The remaining sperms undergo a long and arduous journey travelling from the vagina to the falopian tubes. During this process, most of them die, and only a few dozen finally reach the egg. Among these only one (Or in case of ovular twins, 2 or more) are able to penetrate the egg's surface. The remainder perish in the fallopians.
In a nutshell, both eggs and sperms are released in the body in large numbers, it's just that the sperms are much much more at the start of the fertilization journey. the advantage of this is that the best of them are able to survive till the end, on a track that is not exactly home territory.

The female produces an immune response to the sperm. The more there are, the better the chance that some will get through to the egg. Since she is actually protecting the egg, she only needs the one.

Having multiple sperm increases the chance that the egg will be fertilized. By having many eggs and not enough sperm the chances drop drastically. Millions of sperm die by a woman's white blood cells alone not to mention the harsh environment that it creates.

Sperm are unintelligent, fragile, and have to make a long journey through a not-totally-friendly environment. The egg gets to stay in a nice comfy environment throughout its shorter journey.
