I have a 29 gallon freshwater aquarium. Recently I've been having trouble with brown algae. What causes it and how can I get rid of it? Thank you!

brown algae is caused by excess nutrients in the water. When you get your water testet, you will see a moderate to high level of Nitrate. Keeping your light on too long or having you tank in the sin will cause this to grow too. 8 hours of fake light and limit the sunlight, and if there is food left over after a few minutes when you're feeding your fish, then you're feeding too much. cut back on light and feeding and talk to the person who tests your water about water changes and the algae will slowly go away. Also, plecos and other common algae eaters typically won't eat brown algae...you have to scrub it! Sorry!

What do you mean brown water? That is caused by diatomes. It should settle soon.

If it's an actual algae or bacterial bloom, lessen the amount of food you give to your fish (feed once per day, only as much as your fish can eat in a couple minutes). Also be sure to do weekly water changes of 30-50%. Do 20% changes every few days until the brown water goes away. Be sure to vacuum the gravel.
