There may be a handful of feminists in the Muslim world but there is hardly a movement....

Personally I think feminism has run its course in the West but it can still be useful in the women hating Islamic world....

The thing to remember is that just because we think feminism means one thing, doesn't mean the whole word thinks that way. If a movement were to work it would need to be based on the values of the people, not our values. So it would really need to be something that Muslim people led, not outsiders from the west.

It is the regimes of some Middle Eastern countries that are oppressing not Islam. In places like Saudi Arabia where women have to wear a veil covering everything but the eyes is not a requirement in Islam. If you read about Islam you will find out that it liberated women and not oppress them. Not all Muslim countries oppress women just those that are corrupt. There are in fact many feminists in Muslim countries and they are even more extreme than their counterpart. They are against the objectification of women through the media; women don’t need to show off their bodies in order to feel sexy. There is rather a need to educate women in western societies, not be influence by the media which emphasizes beauty and sex. Take a good look at some of the advertisements on television and you will know what I mean. Look at beer commercials of etc. They are all filled of negative images about women.

Depends on if the women want a feminist movement. I think most women in Muslim countries want drinking water and other necessities more.

No because then they'd be oppressive feminist countries.

And in case you haven't been paying attention to Scandinavia and France, strong feminist presence quite possibly leads to such a weakening of the culture that Muslim countries can basically walk in and instate a religious Islamic state by democracy.

So no. It's not possible either.

Yes! Much of the strong discrimination and harsh treatment of women has nothing to do with the Koran or Islam. Islam would be better by giving women a chance, and this is a force that can't and shouldn't be stopped.

Have you ever heard of Fatima Mernissi? Leila Ahmed? Qasim Amin? Muhktaran Bibi? Shamima Shaikh? Amina Wadud? They are just a few of many Muslim femminists (both makle and female). Don't be too quick to judge.

Well the real question is, would muslim women be willing to ignore their religious teachings! We are liberal in the western world and we seem to pick and choose what we follow in our religion, but this is not so for many people in alot of regions.

It's none of your business really. Clean out your own house before criticizing others.
