If she is popular, then pick a popular name. Think of the setting of the story--not only WHERE it takes place, but also the TIME period. Like, popular names in the '60s are different than those now. Don't pick something very original; pick a common name.
I will give you a few names, though names differ depending on the area you live in:
Jessica, Emily, Michelle, Shannon
Alyssa, Danielle, Kaitlyn, Anna, Lizzy

The popular girl should be Vivian and the unpopular one Sandra (called Sandy).
If you want to keep the unpopular one Vivian, shorten it to Viv except when it's her mom. She wouldn't want to be called Vivian all the time. The popular girl could call her Liv or Liz by accident.
Popular girls tend to have have popular names. If they don't have them when they hit junior high, sometimes they invent them out of their real names. Mary is dull. Marie is popular. I knew one gal whose real name was Candy. She was called Kaye (her middle name) throughout high school.

Emily. It has been the most popular name for a girl in the US for the past three years. If you need a guy name, Jacob has been number one for the past 4 years.

i hit upon that naming them a protracted, classic call shortened to a minimum of something unpredicted or mischievous is friendly on 2 fronts. the classic call is ironic (because of fact they're crammed with youthful hobby and craziness) whilst the nicknames enable perception into their character. Theodore (nicknames: bypass, Cookie ["eo" in "Theodore" appears like oreo. A cookie.], Rex) Christian (possibility, Ty, Can) Philip (Lilly [mocked with the help of pal], Pip, Hill) Richard (Dick [of direction], Richie, Card) Benjamin (Hank, Jam, Engine) in straightforward terms some that I made up. wish this facilitates :).

Tacoa or Tatum, maybe even Summer or Kit.... the last two were cheerleaders in my school, I always thought they were horrible people for thinking they were over me and thinking I was dirt compaired to them. So, if your popular girl is like that, then try one of those.
