Major league baseball began in 1876 with the formation of the National League. It was formed because Chicago owner William Hulbert was trying to avoid punishment for robbing the Boston organization in the National Association of four of its players in 1875.

Cartwright Codefied baseball rules.
Doubleday may have heard of baseball.
1871 - March 17: At Collier's Saloon in New York City, the National Association of Baseball Players is formed. Organized by writer Henry Chadwick, it is baseball's first professional association. Ten teams are represented at the meeting; nine begin the season. The Eastern division was composed of the Boston Red Stockings, the New York Mutuals, the Philadelphia Athletics, the Washington Olympics, and the Troy Haymakers. Playing in the West was the Chicago White Stockings, the Cleevland Forest Citys, the Fort Wayne Kekiog and the Rockford Forest Citys. James W. Kerns of Troy is elected president of the National Association.
1875 - Dec 17 - At William A. Hulbert'shome in Chicago, he and Albert Spalding create the constitution and bylaws for a new league - an organziation of teams, not players. To be known as the National League of professional Base Ball Clubs, it will ban gambling, drunkenness, and disorderly conduct; have paid umpires; and sell tickets for 50-cents.

It's tough to pick one guy, but if you had to it would probably be Henry Chadwick.
Chadwick was the organizer of an 1871 convention in New York, which saw the creation of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NAPBBP). This is where the National Association, the first major league, would be formed. It would only last five years before the NL came around, but it's considered the first real major league.
Credit should also be given to all those owners who attended and were part of this first league.

The most commonly accepted answer is Abner Doubleday, but any historian can tell you that he is not actually the creator of the current game. The game evolved from many other games that were played throughout the 1800s. The first game played with 9 innings, 3 outs, and 9 players on each side had it's rules written by Alexander Cartwright.

well the guy who invented baseball was named Doubleday and it originated in a widespread cornfield, bags of wheat and grain wer used as the bases.
Eventaully when people transitioned it from being just a game into a sport it was then played competitively and became a professional sport in the late 1800's
