The thread that is left after you cut the thread from the bobbin. DO you tie it in a knot and if so how?

Backstitch 2-4 stitches, then forward sew to end of the seam. Then you can safely trim your thread even with the seam.
OR
Tie a knot. Use FrayCheck to secure the knot. Let it dry. Then trim the excess thread close to the knot.
(FrayCheck will last through washings. Be careful to use just a little - it goes a long way and can stain your fabric if you're sloppy.)

Yes, as others have said, you can "backstitch" over your stitching, and then cut the threads. Or, you can tie a simple knot [I usually tie 5x]; you'll need to pull either thread to the other side, such that both threads are on one side of the fabric and CaN be tied together. I'm not sure if you've asked for this additional detail, but: when pulling one thread to other side of fabric, I use a needle/pin/seam ripper to catch the thread [from the side of the fabric I want to pull it to], then pull the thread through the fabric to the other side [& tie].

As you get to the end sewing forward, then sew backward a 1/2 inch or so and then forward again a couple of times to "knot it", keep it from coming undone. Then cut the threads.

it's a good idea to tie a knot in the thread before you cut it - just pull out enough length so that you can make a double or triple knot that won't come undone. I sometimes also put a touch of clear nail polish on the ends to seal them.

i've been sewing for years and have always used the 'back stitch' method. back stitch a couple stitches then forward a couple, cut thread close to fabric. it will work fine!

I run a quick back stich over my seam to "close" it, then trim the threads off close to the fabric

I back-stitch a few stitches over what I have just completed and then I cut close to the fabric.
