My boyfriend was adopted as a child and is now (at 22 yrs old) wanting to change his last name back to his biological father's name. He can't afford to pay a lawyer so I was wondering if there was a way to change it without a lawyer, how would he go about it, and if possible about how much it might cost?

P.S. We live in Tennessee

Just go to the local court house and ask. All you have to do is fill out some paperwork and pay a small fee. The judge will ask if there is any illegal reason he might be trying to change his name, like avoiding debts or something, but its pretty easy.

I am pretty sure you have to have a lawyer. We do here in Georgia. But since it's due to adoption, it may be a special circumstance. Check with Social Security Administration, and Your local probate judges' office.

I can't remember the exact site name but there is a site that will handle everything for like $150. Try keywords legal name change or low cost name change. Hope you can find it and hope it helps. I plan on using it in the next year or so.

You have to go to a atty, he files in court that is the only way you can legally do this, call some law office they'll tell you what they charge and what they need in order to do this change.

Sure, he just needs to go down to the court house and they will be glad to help him. It is very easy to do and can be done without a lawyer.

I think you just petition a judge, and you can do it yourself.
You might try asking your local court office.

I don't think it is all that complicated. Call the Social Security office and they will tell you how to proceed.
