I am a substitute because I only want to work part-time. You would not believe how much ABUSE I was taking!
Finally, I read that new dog training book called Cesar's Way by the Dog Whisperer.
I learned that I should not raise my voice and get emotional. Instead I should calmly and firmly enforce ALL the rules each and every time.
Chewing gum is not usually a suspension unless the student has gone through all the other options to quell the problem. Chances are, she's choosing to be disobedient over and over.

Your sister, I'm sure. was aware of the rule in every school against gum chewing in class. Part of the "learning" experience there is that if you don't follow rules, there are consquences. Sometimes the consequences must be more harsh than seemingly reasonable, in order to to drive the point home clearly.
If anything, your sister and you are stupid for not expecting a punishment for a broken rule. Grow up.

umm, i don't quite understand the question, but...
Some teachers/schools are really strict about the whole gum ordeal (some kids are dumb and stick in under desks/chairs/tables/etc...) and if it's a classroom rule to not have any gum, they can punish the child who is chewing it as they like, I guess. However, i too feel that it's ridiculous that a child gets suspended for chewing gum...when there are worse things that can happen in life, lol. Guess it's just the point our education system has gotten too... ) :

I am a teacher and I definitely have a sense of humor! I don't understand the question but I disagree, teachers are not stupid. Everyone is different and to continuely lump people into one classification or another is ridiculous. Maybe your question should read, "Why are some teachers so stupid?"

That isn't as crazy as not letting the kid get a bandaid when they get hurt on the playground or be able to take a tylenol if they got headache. They make the kid call the parents to bring them to them.. the school nurse is a thing of the past. I don't ever remember schools allowing gum in class but suspension is a bit harsh. We used to just spit it out in the wastebasket and resume studies.

Learn the rules and learn some English too. Then we'll talk about breaking rules and disrespecting the teachers and schools that are paid for with Americans' tax dollars.
If you want sympathy, go sit on your mommy's lap.

It's really easy to piss off a teacher. They often lack common sense and often have no sense of humor,
