I am not a heroin addict or have any addiction, however I have known people who were. The people aren't self centered, its the drugs that are self centered, the drugs cause people to feed the addiction. Not an excuse but the truth, this person you speak of needs to get help, but with all addictions, they have to want help before they seek it, they must do it for themselves.

With female heroin addicts there is a very high history of sexual abuse when they were kids. Male addicts show the same kinds of things in their background.
There are many possible explanations for why people abuse drugs. Some of them are:
-- Genetic tendencies
-- Emotional or psychiatric problems
-- Recreation that got out of hand
-- Ordinary bad behavior
The real cause in any case may be any of these, or any combination, plus other factors. If you ever find the complete answer, call me first and we will both make a billion dollars.
If you want an instant solution, the best possibility so far seems to be something called ibogaine. Many addicts report that one treatment gave them enough insight into their problems that they were able to stop.
see http://druglibrary.org/schaffer for more information on these topics.

So really you're just trying to project your anger on people that have absolutely nothing to do with your friend or his/her children so that you can feel vindicated? Wow...talk about self centered. Don't throw stones from a glass house buddy.
On top of that......you already know the answer to your question. They are self centered because they are addicted! What's your excuse? The addiction runs their lives......they need compassion and treatment....not someone like you pushing them down even further.

You need to understand that this addict is dealing with an addiction that blinds him/her to what is REALLY going on in the world. The drug makes you do things that you would NEVER do otherwise. When an addiction is strong, some people know that they have a problem and they need to stop.......but the drug is too powerfull to control, this is why they continue to do it. Don't place full blame on this person. Yes, they made the choice to do this, but on the same hand, they DEFINATELY need help to stop doing this even after they decide to stop. The drug has taken full control of their life, they no longer have control over themselves anymore. If you really care and want them to stop, get them some help and try to get them admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. Trust me when I say that they CANNOT stop this on their own, and they will not get better on their own, especially with heroin, this person is in dire need of help from someone else.......maybe this person should be you. Who knows you could just save his/her life.

I'm not addicted to heroin, but I had another addiction I beat. However, the answer is in the word itself...."addiction". It is a compulsion (mental and physical) that causes their actions. However, most people don't realize they are "sick" and treat them like they are "bad" people. They aren't "bad" people trying to be "good", just "sick" people trying to get well.
You wouldn't go up to a cancer patient and yell at them for causing such hurt or hardship to their friends/families. It's the same principal here, however with addicts, you need to be firm and not enable them to continue their behavior.

IT IS FIRST A CHOICE AND THEN AN ADDICTION WHICH IS SO POWERFUL YOU CANNOT EVEN UNDERSTAND IT HOW DO YOU EXPECT THE ADDICT TO UNDERSTAND IT!!! IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE THE SELFISH ONE TRY BEING MORE SUPPORTIVE OR GET AWAY FROM THE PROBLEM PERSON IF YOU CANNOT HELP THEM>
