Its not dead, but it floats at the surface almost all day, it has black spots on it and it looks like the skin under its stomach is peeling.

Ich is white spots that look like grains of salt not black spots, so it's not ich. Floating usually means it has a problem with its swim bladder, is the fish floating with its stomach facing up? If the stomach is sticking out of the water then the black spots and the peeling could be because the skin is drying out. Try fasting for a few days then feed a deshelled pea, squish it if it is too big for the fish to eat. Check the water params too, some fish can be sensitive to off water and it can cause them to float, the ammonia and nitrite should be zero and the nitrates shouldn't be higher then 20.

It could be something as simple as Ick..or even D.Latum. Many of the food manufacturers have toll free numbers and are very helpful with questions of this type. I also found my vet could answer and treat many. If a vet is out..call the nearest pet center and take your water to be tested (usually done for free). Sorry to say if he is floating already he might not be savable :(
I called the number on my fish food once and they not only answered me but sent me a huge package of goodies with care books and food and medicine..worth a try if you are planning on keeping aquariums ..good luck

If it is black and the skin is peeling, I would say a broad spectrum antibiotic. It doesnt sound good though. Try tetracycline or erythromycin, Ive used both together.

I had the same problem with mine.It probably is some type of fungus or ick try to get some fungus and ick killer it the same bottle so you can treat both at the same time. I had to flush my goldfish because it got so bad that it started to spread. Ask your local pet store to help you find the right stuff or call your local vet.
