A lot has been written about FDR's battle with polio and the disability that he suffered with as a result. For many, losing the freedom of independent movement would have been a tragedy. But, Roosevelt refused to be brought down by his handicap and succeeded to become first the Governor of New York and then the President, and in the process he was able to lift an entire nation out of the tragedy that was the Great Depression!

There are so many, but one of my personal favorites was the founding of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment during the Civil War. The nations first all-black regiment. They movie "Glory" profiles them. They were treated as second class soldiers, denied most of the equipment they needed to do their job, but ended up being an incredibly effective fighting unit with very high morale. They ended up leading the charge against the confederate Fort Wagner. They suffered heavy losses, and most of the white officer corps were killed, but their bravery has been chronicled in history. Triumphant in that they proved that black soldiers were just as good as white soldiers, and they did so without the support of most of the military establishment. Tragic in that so many were slaughtered in that attack on Fort Wagner.

The death and Resurrection of Christ. Also, Malcolm X... in the end, before his death, he saw the error of his ways and left hatred behind. "The unsinkable Molly Brown," unlike the movie, went back to retrieve boats and fill them with people after the Titanic sank. Pocahontas... and the list goes on, but I'm done for now.
