extensive knowledge of the subject that is being taught. there are always kids who think outside of the box and you have to be ready to answer those kind of questions. Also personality and communication. You have to be able to creatively communicate your point to the students to not only keep their attention, but to also help them remember what the lecture was about.

You must first need to be a caring, compassionate person. Compassionate about your work will help you to be effective in your teaching skills. In today's schools, a teacher must be able to engage and challenge students to express themselves without being judgmental. An outstanding teacher not only is competent in the course content but interested in the student as a person who has the ability to become whoever the student wants to become in life. In almost all cases, the student sees the teacher as the expert and a role model. An outstanding teacher know how to create an environment where learning is an opportunity of discovery and growth!

Knowledge of classroom management techniques is essential, to my mind, for a classroom teacher (as well as the ability to put those techniques to use). Of course that knowledge of her/his subject or area is also a must.

Class discipline...it's not fair to those who want to learn, to have to be a part of a dysfunctional classroom. Also, empathy and understanding of the plights of the children with whom you work. Lastly, creativity allows a teacher to find ways to relate to kids and keep them excited about learning.

Be interesting! I don't know how many times I fell asleep in class because the teachers were boring.
