Peter K is right. In computing, we count not in even chunks of 1000, but in chunks of 1024, because of the binary counting system (1's and 0's).
1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte
1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte
1024 gigabyte = 1 terabyte
1024 terabyte = 1 petabyte
and son on. For further information, look up the binary or "base 2" counting system.
