Depends, is this guy in a solo practice? If it's just him, then PC would work. If you're talking about the John Doe firm, of which he's the head, then you could put LLP. If he's just a partner, you'd put the firm name, and then on the next line you'd put ATTN: John Doe. I've personally never used the Atty abreviation, so I wouldn't reccomend it.

I think if you address it

John Doe Esq
John Doe and Associates LLP
High Street
Anytown 12345

Mr Doe will be very happy. Most attorneys like being addressed as Esq. in much the same way medical doctors like being addressed Dr. I know its an ego thing for some attorneys, but most ego-stroking is harmless, don't you think?

Usually, you list what is on their business card. But they don't mind if you don't use their title the first time. It will get to them. One more thing, make sure that you send things with a Return Receipt Requested. This way you know that the attorney's office has received. (Actually do that with any legal document.)

The attorneys that I work for don't really care as long as you are paying them!
