The energy ratings are based on how energy efficient the item is. 'A' is at the top of the scale, which means although the item may cost more initially, it will be cheaper to run in the long run, using less power, so helping the environment as well.

Its the amount of energy required to run it. the less energy the better for the environment but the more expensive the item.
