It's not nasty. It's a way to learn about your own body and learn what pleases you, which in turn makes your partner happier.
As someone posted earlier, it's the safest sex, and it's sex with someone you love.

First of all, masterbation isn't nasty, although for younger minds it certainly is understandable that it would be thought of that way.
However, masterbation is a necessary human action. Sexual urges are a biological force that drive almost every decision we make. Few men can honestly say that they do not think of sexual interaction with a woman almost every single day, and Im sure women are in the same boat (I am a man so Im not going to speak for women).
Masterbation, however, makes it so we can satisfy, albeit only somewhat, the sexual urges that would otherwise control our lives to a point of interfering with things that are obviously more important than sex. It allows for a temporary release of sexual tension that is created by inner conscious or outside distraction until a more physical and intimate release can be achieved, i.g. sexual intercourse. Remember, procreation is the only way to sustain the human race, whether it was a God that made it this way or whether it was just made to be so, the pleasure we feel during intercourse is not a mistake. We are meant to have sex and we are meant to enjoy it. Sexual urge is no differenant than hunger for food. It is an inner and inate desire built withint the human organism. We have to have it as pleasure seeking beings. Masterbation allows for us to achieve that pleasure when sex is not an option. Plus it just feels good.

Why do you see it as disgusting is it because of some religeous thing or is it just some personal thing you have either way people masturbate for different reasons some due to high sex drive some due to the fact that it feels good and some due to them imagining certain situations!
I'm assuming that you and the people who agree with you have never done it and therefore are unqualified to comment!
I masturbate and enjoy watching my partner do it too so what is nasty to you is not so for other people you are entitled to you're own opinion but you should make it an educated one first!

It's caused by the sex drive, all adult people with normal hormonal levels have the need to do it, if they are not getting "enough" sexual activity.
Due to having a high sex drive, some people may need to "relieve" themselves more oftenly than others.
It's a natural thing, and it helps to prevent stress and mental illness. Animals rape each other. Luckily we just masturbate.

Cuts out diseases, pregnancies, and not having to deal with a significant other. If you dont have a sex partner this helps alot. Or if you have a partner and they don't seem to finish the job this helps too. You are the only person who knows how to please you.
